An eclectic family dinner menu inspired by the children’s book Just Like Me by Vanessa Brantley-Newton.

Our Family Dinner Book Club theme for the year is Social-Emotional Learning! This month we’re learning to love and accept our unique selves with Just Like Me by Vanessa Brantley-Newton. To accompany this themed dinner menu, Growing Book by Book has a reading list of additional books. Sunny Day Family shares a selection of crafts to help celebrate.
Just Like Me is a treasury of poetry by Vanessa Brantley-Newton about the uniqueness of all kinds of kids. It is filled with vibrant illustrations to accompany each poem, and it speaks to the heart of children, geared especially towards girls. I have a son, and we loved every page of this book.
One of the poems talks about gumbo and describes it as “a little bit of everyone all mixed together”. I loved this description, and gumbo is a part of my own family heritage, so that is where we take our inspiration for this month’s family dinner menu. We’re also adding in some unique and maybe weird food combinations that kids of all ages love. Read through this collection of poetry with your own family, and fill out this menu with your own favorites or new creations.
