The Littles – Family Dinner Book Club

The Littles dinner menu from ChefSarahElizabeth.com

Our Family Dinner Book Club selection for the month of May is The Littles by John Peterson.
Here you’ll find a menu that can be prepared with the help of your children, and will hopefully be a fun and interactive activity for the whole family. Scroll all the way to the bottom for some easy crafts, as well. Head over to Growing Book by Book for some talking points to get the conversation started and an idea for a family service project. We invite you to share a picture from your dinner with us anytime during the month on our Family Dinner Book Club Facebook page.

The Littles are tiny people who stand no more than 6 inches tall and also happen to have tails. They live in the home of The Biggs (an average-sized human couple) and when the Biggs go on vacation the Littles experience more adventure than they were prepared for. While reading this book I was trying to think of the perfect meal for the Littles. I couldn’t decide if I should make us feel little by serving all huge foods, or if I should serve tiny foods that the Littles would be able to eat. I went with a mixture of the two ideas.

Our meal is served on the littlest plates we own, with even smaller plates set out for the Littles. We will be enjoying Mini Spaghetti and Meatballs, no cook spring succotash chopped up into tiny bite-sized pieces, little fruit skewers, bowls of milk for our cat friends, mini bell pepper pizzas, and a giant cookie. For the mini spaghetti and meatballs, I took dried spaghetti and broke it into as little pieces as I could. Then I mixed it with a simple meat sauce (the ground beef becomes the “mini meatballs”). We have a set of dessert wine glasses which the girls love to drink out of because they’re so small. We used those for our family dinner book club. If you do the same, make sure to have a carafe of your favorite beverage at the table because you will be serving many refills in those tiny glasses!

Kids In The Kitchen!

Get the kids involved in cooking this meal. They can be in charge of what fruits to use for the little fruit skewers, as well as what toppings to add to their own mini pizzas. Set out the pizza ingredients and let everyone build their own pizzas. Older kids can carefully skewer the fruit onto the sticks.

Craft Corner
We all went to our The Littles dinner wearing tails so that we could be like the family in the book.
-Simply safety pin some ribbon onto the backs of everyone’s trousers and you have instant tails! You can also use strong tape or clothespins if you’re nervous about the safety pins.

Small Name Cards
-Use any craft or plain paper you have on hand. Cut it into fun shapes. Write everyone’s names as small as you can. Then think of a trait that each person displays in a big way and write that as big as you can on each name card. This is a great way to practice writing for kids, as well as recognizing each other’s strengths.

Place Setting for The Littles
-Look around your house for tiny things that you think The Littles would use as a table and chairs. Set those on your own dinner table so that The Littles have a place to sit, too.

Now put on your mouse costumes and scurry on over to Growing Book by Book for talking points and a family service project!
