Our Family Dinner Book Club selection for the month of October is Grandfather’s Dream by Holly Keller. Here you’ll find a menu that can be prepared with the help of your children, and will hopefully be a fun and interactive activity for the whole family. Head over to Growing Book by Book for some talking points to get the conversation started as well as an idea for a family service project. Then visit Sunny Day Family for a fun craft. We invite you to share a picture from your dinner with us anytime during the month on our Family Dinner Book Club Facebook page.

Grandfather’s Dream is a book set in Vietnam shortly after the war has ended. A grandfather tells his grandson the meaning of the cranes and why he wishes for them to return to Vietnam. This is a lovely book about hope, showcasing Vietnamese culture and landscape.

When planning the menu for this month’s family dinner book club, I got to go to a personal cooking lesson from a Vietnamese mama. My brother’s wife is Vietnamese, and when I asked the pair to come over and cook for me they informed me that they do not know how to cook Vietnamese food. I was utterly disappointed. They redeemed themselves when they arranged an evening for me to visit her mother’s house for a cooking lesson and dinner. I perched on a dining stool while my gracious hostess cooked her family dinner and explained each step of the way what she was doing, the ingredients she was using, and what she would do for other dishes.

I came to the conclusion that Vietnamese food is comforting, simple, and made with love. The meal you see pictured here is not what was served that night. My photos didn’t come out well, so I will be cooking the same meal for my family this week to get some better pictures. What you see here is one of my favorites: Pho. Scroll all the way down to see several links for pho recipes from around the web. I don’t have my own version – yet, but I get to go back for another cooking lesson soon where we will be making pho together.
