Our Family Dinner Book Club selection for the month of August is Hope for Haiti by Jesse Joshua Watson. Here you’ll find a menu that can be prepared with the help of your children, and will hopefully be a fun and interactive activity for the whole family. Head over to Growing Book by Book for some talking points to get the conversation started as well as an idea for a family service project. Then visit Sunny Day Family for a fun craft. We invite you to share a picture from your dinner with us anytime during the month on our Family Dinner Book Club Facebook page.

Hope for Haiti is a book that gives us a glimpse into Haitian life immediately following the big earthquake of 2010. The author wrote this book after “seeing photos of children playing soccer amidst the chaos.” I think this book showcases really well the joy and life that children have inside of themselves that they sometimes just can’t contain. In the book, a woman gets annoyed with the children for playing during a time of devastation. I see that happening in real life often. We need more of the joy and hope in our lives that children carry inside them.

This menu is a mixture of cultures. In the book, the boy shares a memory of having green papaya salad and a soda at a soccer game with his father. As far as I know, green papaya salad is a Thai recipe, so that is what I have down below. We do not drink soda in our house, so instead I made watermelon agua fresca, one of our favorite summer treats.
