Volver Inspired Menu

"Volver" inspired Spanish menu from ChefSarahElizabeth.com

This month’s Food n Flix Club is hosted by CulturEatz and we’re watching the film Volver starring Penelope Cruz. I had never watched this movie before a few weeks ago… and I actually still haven’t watched the entire film.

I was excited about this choice because I like Penelope Cruz, and I heard it was a sort of girl power, coming of age film. I rented it on Amazon Prime and sat down with my husband to watch. We got about 15 minutes in, to the scene where Penelope Cruz is getting off the bus after her long day of work and her teenage daughter is standing in the rain on the verge of tears. I was pretty sure I knew what was going to be revealed, and I had already been upset by the previous scene, that I just had to turn it off. In recent years I have become very emotionally sensitive to scenes in films, television, and books that involve the abuse of children in any form.

A few days went by and I was thinking more about the film and wondering if I would be able to stomach an entire screening. I searched online for vague descriptions of the plot, and came across enough reviews and retellings to feel that I would be able to watch the film knowing that it has a better outcome than I originally thought. Amazon Prime rentals are only available for 24 hours after pressing play, so I lost it, and I didn’t want to pay for it again.

So I hope you accept my Volver inspired menu even though I haven’t actually watched the entire film. Through my internet searches I learned that the director, Pedro Almodóvar, hired his sisters to come cook the food for the film instead of hiring a kitchen crew because he wanted it to be as authentic as possible. I love that!

I had fun learning some new recipes and introducing them to my family.

  2. Your whole menu looks delicious. I am especially drooling over the Tortilla Española. I have to laugh at Debra as the other “usually in at the very last possible moment” F’nF participants. 😉 I am looking forward to the re-watch of one of my favorites and as I think I already know what I want to make, hope to get my entry in early too–before someone beats me to it. Hah!

    •   Michelle ColemanMay 16, 2012I was flabeergastbd by your observation that you visited a Mildura supermarket which stocked only imported oranges. You are right to suggest it is these market forces that will put Australian producers out of business and I like the practical suggestion of tax breaks on farm machinery and chemicals to ensure we keep the industry strong, particularly if we are heading toward food shortages world wide.
