A Fine Dessert – Family Dinner Book Club

A Fine Dessert family dinner menu from ChefSarahElizabeth.com

Our Family Dinner Book Club selection for the month of June A Fine Dessert by Emily Jenkins. Here you’ll find a menu that can be prepared with the help of your children, and will hopefully be a fun and interactive activity for the whole family. Head over to Growing Book by Book for some talking points to get the conversation started as well as an idea for a family service project. Then visit Sunny Day Family for a fun craft. We invite you to share a picture from your dinner with us anytime during the month on our Family Dinner Book Club Facebook page.

A Fine Dessert is a story about how cooking tools, techniques, ingredients, and family has changed in America throughout the generations. Each family prepares and enjoys the dessert Blackberry Fool using the tools of their time. I like how this book takes a look at how things have changed in America over the years. As with any children’s book, I believe this book touches merely on the surface of the topics it covers. To me, it is a great starting point to a deeper conversation. A Fine Dessert has been the center of some controversy regarding the portrayal of slavery. I have already stated my opinion on the matter, but I’m not so sure my opinion is the one that matters as I have no personal or familial history with slavery. Please make the decision that feels right for your family. If that is disregarding this book completely, fine. If that is using this book as a launching off point to a deeper conversation, also fine.

Here in this space we like to talk about food! I wanted to serve a family dinner that felt very “American”. Roast Beef dinner fits the bill. This is a classic American dish that has been around as long as cows have been around.
