Drum Dream Girl Family Dinner Book Club

Drum Dream Girl dinner menu from ChefSarahElizabeth.com

Our Family Dinner Book Club selection for the month of April is Drum Dream Girl by Margarita Engle. Here you’ll find a menu that can be prepared with the help of your children, and will hopefully be a fun and interactive activity for the whole family. Head over to Growing Book by Book for some talking points to get the conversation started as well as an idea for a family service project. Then visit Sunny Day Family for a fun craft. We invite you to share a picture from your dinner with us anytime during the month on our Family Dinner Book Club Facebook page.

Drum Dream Girl is an inspiring story about a girl who wants to be a drummer, but where she lives only boys are drummers. This little fact didn’t stop her, and she continued to drum to hear heart’s content. It is a wonderful story that shows girls, and all kids, that they really can be anything they want to be regardless of social norms or what other people think. This book is inspired by the true story of Milo Castro Zaldarriaga from Cuba.

I decided to go with Cuban food for this month’s Family Dinner Book Club. Ropa Vieja is my favorite Cuban dish, and the slow cooker version is so easy to make that I had to go with this as the main course.

Kids in the Kitchen
Kids can help add all the ropa vieja ingredients to the slow cooker and set it to cook. Kids can also measure out the ingredients for the rice, black beans, and asparagus. Take the kids with you to the grocery store or farmers market, and let them choose some exotic fruits to serve with dinner.
