Our Family Dinner Book Club selection for the month of August is A Color of His Own by Leo Lionni. Here you’ll find a menu that can be prepared with the help of your children, and will hopefully be a fun and interactive activity for the whole family. Head over to Growing Book by Book for some talking points to get the conversation started and an idea for a family service project. We invite you to share a picture from your dinner with us anytime during the month on our Family Dinner Book Club Facebook page.

Many moons ago, before I found my true calling as a chef, I was enrolled in Early Childhood Education classes with the plan of becoming a preschool teacher. I took an entire semester about quality children’s literature and immediately became a children’s book snob. One of my favorite author’s is Leo Lionni. I love the messages in his books as well as the illustrations. A Color of His Own is a sweet book about a chameleon who feels he doesn’t fit in. He finds another chameleon to match colors with and “they were green together, and purple, and yellow, and red with white polka dots. And they lived happily ever after.” I thought it would be fun to serve a meal that matched all the colors the chameleons change into together. We have green guacamole, purple corn chips, yellow corn on the cob, and one of our family’s favorites: red watermelon with white polka dots of whipped cream. Chameleons change colors, so we have a fun Magical Color Changing Punch as well. This is such a fun activity to do with your kids.

Kids in the Kitchen
Get the kids involved with cooking family dinner! Mashing the avocados for the guacamole, tossing the potatoes with oil and salt, and using cookie cutters to cut out the watermelon slices are all jobs that are great for the younger kids.

Kids can help pick out the vegetables to eat with dinner, as well as wash and measure ingredients.

Craft Corner
Make your own chameleon out of chenille stems! Check out the step-by-step photos below for how to make these little cuties. Choose your favorite color, or twist a few colors together.

Wrap chenille stems around your utensils in the colors that match your chameleons.

Mark each seat with a different colored chenille stem and have everyone find their favorite color or draw colors from a hat to figure out who sits where for dinner.
