Happy Father’s Day

My dad lives 2000 miles away from me now, but there is still so much of him right here with me everyday. Of his four children, I am the only girl. A fact I love.

My dad is very creative. He can draw, paint, write jokes, teach himself to play instruments, and do magic. My brothers inherited his funny bone. I can’t tell a joke if my life depended on it. I often mix up the punch line and tell it too soon. My dad can make me laugh almost without trying. Most things that pass his lips are funny or silly. A trip to visit my dad is full of laughter and fun times.

My dad worked on the radio for most of my childhood. This meant working late and often sleeping during the day. I blame him for my hibernation tendencies. He would fall asleep on the couch in the living room while we were all watching TV. My favorite thing about this was that he would lay on his side with his knees bent. So his legs formed a triangle with the back of the couch. I called this his cubby and would sit in that space to watch TV while he slept.

My dad fostered my love of sourdough bread. He always had a loaf at his house, but by the time I left for the weekend it was usually empty, or close to. He taught me to make tuna melts. His version is much better than any kind I have had at a restaurant. Sourdough bread sprinkled on the outside with parmesan makes this sandwich the best ever. I still make it for myself sometimes.

My dad always had bowls of candy around the house. Cinnamon Jolly Ranchers, Hershey’s Miniatures, and Jelly Bellys are the ones I remember. I always have candy at my home. Usually in bowls on my counter or dinning table, sometimes hidden away in the cupboard. Another trait I got from him.

My dad would make Ghirardelli brownies for us. One of my favorite memories of him was when I was a teenager, and he had just started wearing glasses, but not really. He owned glasses, but rarely wore them. He took out the box of brownie mix to read the directions. Then he extended his arm as far as he could to make the words more clear. Then he placed that box on the kitchen counter and took a few steps back! Hahaha. All to avoid putting his glasses on his face.

My dad would often write, “You’re my favorite daughter” in my birthday cards (I’m his only daughter). So, Dad. You are my FAVORITE father! I love you so much and feel so blessed to have a man like you in my life. I love you, Dad.

Aside from my own (the best), there are other men in my life who make awesome Dads.

Sean- My brother. The oldest of us, and the only one currently with children. He took care of us in some ways growing up. He is raising my niece to be a fine young girl. The thing that makes me the most proud of him, though, is that he became a step-father on his wedding day, at the age of 21. Being a step-parent can be a challenge, but you would never guess that my nephew isn’t biologically related. My brother took Jacob under his wing and has treated him like nothing less than a son since the day he entered their lives. He loves his family and provides for them in all the ways he knows how. I can only hope to find a man as honorable as him.

David- My husband’s best friend until the day he died. My husband loved and respected David more than almost anyone else. He would talk to David in some form every day. David is the father of two beautiful young girls. Jon looked to David for advice and guidance before proposing to me, and in the early stages of our marriage, and I know he loved what he saw in David as a father. David and I recently had the chance to sit down and chat, spend some quality time together, something we haven’t been able to do in a while. Even in the midst of trials, he makes it quite clear that his daughters are the center of his world. He loves those girls more than anything and I know he is doing everything he can to protect them and raise them right.

There are many great fathers in my life and on the outskirts of my life. I am honored to know you and watch you do what you do best. Love your children and show them what it means to be a man.

Happy Father’s Day to my dad, and to all the wonderful dads out there!
